A CNN blog says Herman Cain is a licensed minister and has been since 2002. HIs home Church is one of the most liberal Baptist churches in the country. Yet, it is affiliated with a national body that does no tallow for the ordination of women and minsters or high church officials..
News of this licenseraises conflict of church and state to the highest level since George Washington left office in 1789.
The blog article "The Liberal church of Herman Cain can be found at HTTP//religion.blogsCNN.com/2011/10/18/ the-liberal-church-of Herman -Cain. The article is by lined by Eric Marrapodi and John Blake.
Buried in the text is the surprising fact that Herman Cain is a licensed minster hand has been one since 2002.
The Constitutions ays "there shall be no religious test for public office in the United State or among the several states" But Cain's stand push the idea to the brink. Is acting as a minster or as a politician when he says as he has that he would not consider Muslims for high public office in his Administration.
Is that a licensed minster position or is it a political one?
What about his statement about electrical fences along the border. How does this square with the religious command so often cited by Mike Huchabee "Remember the alien Ianthe land, you were once one"
Then there is the recent statement on abortion where he said it was up to the mother and thefamily to make a chioceabout abortion and not the government ; and ,that he didn't want goverment interference Then he turned and said he opposes abortion even in case of rape or incest.
We cannot leave in limbo his position in favor of Michelle Bachmann's Marrage Amendment that in effect federalizes marriage and divorce law-and by token child custody and parental visitation rights. This would be thelargest intrusion of federal power since 1789 because marriage has always been recognized as a state funtion. In fact only 2 federal laws exist-the prohibtion against polygamy passed after Utah was admitted to the Union and the Defense of MarriagetAct which is now before the US Suprme Court which is expected to rule on a significant challenge this spring.
Is this political or religous?
We submit that Cain canot meet the separation of chuch and state issue fairly, honestly or completely. And that is why he should be barred from seeking the Presidency.
He himself has raised the issue of no allowing other to attain office because of their religous beliefs and violating publicly the Constitutuion he is supposed to defend. He has made clear in aninterview on Meet the Press he would not appoint person whe were muslims as judges.
Because he cannot separate the person from religious belief-and the fact that is a a licensed minster raises conflicts that best be avioded.
